Lake County, Montana plans to bill the state for costs related to felony prosecutions of Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) members under Public Law 280.
Lake County, Montana plans to bill the state for costs related to felony prosecutions of Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) members. This decision comes after the county agreed in 1953 to absorb such costs. Lake County is set to withdraw its consent to bear the costs of Public Law 280, which grants the state jurisdiction over tribal members who commit felony crimes. The county will begin tracking expenses and billing the state for certain law enforcement services provided on the Flathead Reservation, where the CSKT operate under PL280.
