Rising sea levels due to climate change could severely disrupt crude oil shipments, threatening energy security in import-dependent nations such as China, South Korea, and Japan. Many of the world's largest terminals, particularly low-lying ports and bunkering facilities, are vulnerable to flooding, warned the China Water Risk (CWR) think tank. A 2021 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts that, under current trends, average sea levels could rise by over a metre by the end of the century, with a two-metre rise not ruled out.
