1,392-patient study finds 40% of traumatic brain injury patients on prolonged life support recovered independence.
A new study by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and other universities found that many patients who died after traumatic brain injuries may have survived and recovered if their families had waited to take them off life support. The study analyzed 1,392 patients from 18 trauma centers in the US over a 7½-year period, comparing those for whom life support was withdrawn to similar patients who remained on life support. Among the latter group, over 40% recovered at least some independence.
