NSW imposes a funeral levy from July 1, 2024.

New South Wales (NSW) will impose a funeral levy from July 1, 2024, which includes $41 per cremation, $63 per ash interment, and $156 per burial. Critics, particularly in rural and regional areas, have criticized the levy as a "death tax" due to concerns about additional financial burdens on councils and grieving families. NSW Lands Minister Steve Kamper defended the levy, stating that it would ensure fair distribution of costs for families and address longstanding issues with NSW cemeteries and crematoria.
