The American Academy of Pediatrics now allows HIV-positive mothers to breastfeed with "very low" risk if they follow guidelines and use antiretroviral drugs.

The US pediatricians group, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), has changed its position to allow mothers with HIV to breastfeed their infants with a "very low" risk if they follow certain guidelines with support from their medical care team. The group now recognizes that antiretroviral drugs can reduce the risk of transmitting HIV through breast milk to less than 1%. This policy change comes after decades of advising against breastfeeding for mothers with HIV.
