Virgin Trains applies for permission to run a London-Glasgow service under Open Access, challenging incumbent Avanti West Coast.

Under an Open Access licence, Virgin would not receive state subsidies and would run the rail service independently. Virgin previously operated on the West Coast line for 22 years and aims to increase competition and consumer choice.
