Food regulator FSSAI has urged fruit traders and food business operators not to use the banned product 'calcium carbide' for ripening fruits, especially during the mango season. This follows the release of acetylene gas containing harmful traces of arsenic and phosphorus when calcium carbide is used. FSSAI has advised Food Safety Departments of states/UTs to remain vigilant and take strict action against those indulging in unlawful practices.
