Alabama Republicans passed a temporary law in March to protect IVF treatments after the state Supreme Court ruled embryos as children, causing a national uproar. However, the GOP-controlled Legislature adjourned without revisiting the issue for a long-term fix, despite promising to do so. Governor Kay Ivey called the initial law a "short-term measure" and expected further work on the issue.
