Supreme Court upholds mandatory retirement age for sheriffs in dismissing Seamus Mallon's appeal.
The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal by County Sheriff Seamus Mallon, who challenged the law requiring him to retire at 70. Mallon, appointed in 1987, claimed that the mandatory retirement age infringed age discrimination provisions of the Employment Equality Act 1998 and was incompatible with an EU directive on equal treatment in employment. The court ruled against Mallon, upholding the mandatory retirement age for sheriffs.
