A magpie lark and three magpies in Australia were found with blow gun darts, prompting WIRES to condemn the incidents as "deliberate cruelty" to protected native birds.

A native Australian bird, a magpie lark, was found in Albion Park with a blow gun dart in its neck, and three adult magpies in Chisholm, near Maitland, were spotted with darts protruding from their head, beak, neck, and corner of one bird's eye. WIRES, a wildlife welfare organisation, has condemned these incidents as "deliberate cruelty" and expressed concerns about the possibility of a copycat shooter. The local native birds, magpies and magpie larks, are protected by law and the use of blow dart guns is prohibited.
