India topped the global charts for Internet shutdowns in 2023, recording 116 instances, accounting for 41% of the total 283 shutdowns worldwide, according to Access Now. This marks the sixth consecutive year India has led the list. Since 2016, India has contributed 53% of the 1,458 shutdowns globally, with a reported economic impact of $1.9 billion for India and a loss of $118 million in foreign investment in the first half of 2023 alone.
