77-year-old Michael Ignatieff, a Canadian historian and writer, has received Spain's prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences. Known for his critical reflections on major conflicts of the present day, Ignatieff has written over 20 books on topics such as human rights, foreign policy, economics, and nationalism. He has taught at Harvard, Cambridge, and Oxford universities and has been involved in Canadian politics as the president of the Liberal Party in 2009. The 50,000-euro ($54,000) award is one of eight annual prizes given by the foundation in areas including arts, communication, science, and sports.
