Ontario's government introduces new penalties for car thieves, including 10-year license suspensions for first-time offenders and lifetime bans for third convictions, to combat rising auto theft rates.

Ontario's government introduces new penalties for car thieves, including suspending driver's licenses for at least 10 years for first-time offenders and lifetime bans for third convictions. The legislation aims to combat the rising rates of auto theft in the province, which have exceeded $1 billion in insurance claims for the first time ever in 2023. The Ford government has pledged $51 million over three years for a new organized crime and auto theft task force led by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and a major auto theft prosecution team.
