High Court in Ireland declares Defence Forces order prohibiting unofficial protests attendance by soldiers unconstitutional.
The High Court in Ireland ruled that a Defence Forces order prohibiting attendance at unofficial protests and parades by serving soldiers is unconstitutional. The order, issued by Major General Kevin Cotter in August 2018, targeted Sergeant Martin Bright, who was challenging the ban to attend a Dublin protest in September 2018 over pay and conditions in the armed forces. The judge found the order was in breach of the soldier's constitutional rights and outside the powers of Major General Cotter as being disproportionate.
