Australian war crimes whistleblower David McBride, a former military lawyer, has been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for leaking classified military documents that exposed alleged Australian war crimes in Afghanistan. McBride pleaded guilty to stealing and sharing over 200 secret documents with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, which led to an investigative series called "The Afghan Files." The documents contained allegations of Australian special forces unlawfully killing 39 Afghans during the war. McBride will serve a non-parole period of two years and three months.
