A Francis Bacon portrait of his great love, George Dyer, sold for $27.7 million at Sotheby's spring sales in New York, topping the first night of contemporary art auctions which grossed $234.6 million. The artwork is part of a series of ten paintings made by Bacon between 1966 and 1968. Sotheby's aims to collect between $549 million and $784 million this week in New York, following good results in Europe.
