Health organizations in Ontario request the province to develop an alcohol strategy ahead of the planned loosening of alcohol rules by 2026, which will allow beer, wine, cider, and ready-to-drink cocktails to be sold in convenience stores and all grocery stores. This follows Premier Doug Ford's 2018 promise to expand alcohol sales. Over a dozen health groups, including the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, warn that alcohol leads to thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of hospital admissions in Ontario each year. The province plans to invest $10 million to support social responsibility and public health efforts related to alcohol consumption.
