Indian Supreme Court rules advocates not liable under Consumer Protection Act 1986.

The Indian Supreme Court has ruled that advocates cannot be held liable under the Consumer Protection Act 1986, stating that legal professionals' work is unique and specialized, making them incomparable to other professions. This means that advocates cannot be sued for poor service before consumer courts. The ruling overturns a 2007 verdict of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, which had ruled that advocates and their services fall under the purview of the Consumer Protection Act 1986. The bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal made this determination on Tuesday.
