NSW government spent $74m on private hospitals to reduce pandemic-induced elective surgery backlog in Hunter New England Health district.

The NSW government spent $74m over four years on private hospitals to reduce the elective surgery backlog in the Hunter New England Health district during the pandemic. The funding, allocated through the "collaborative care" program, ended on December 31, 2021. Despite the efforts, doctors report ongoing issues in completing urgent and non-urgent surgeries in the public system, with 8,620 surgeries performed from January 2020 to December 2023 at 14 private hospitals.
