20,000 birds observed during daylight migration at Bear Divide in the San Gabriel Mountains.

At Bear Divide near LA, a unique trail witnesses a rare spectacle of daylight bird migration. This site, in the San Gabriel Mountains, is one of the few places in the western U.S. where bird migration can be observed during daylight hours. Birds are funneled through the passageway at Bear Divide, allowing researchers to identify, catch, and study them as they fly low. On exceptional days, up to 20,000 birds can be seen passing by.
