3-4% of self-identified Black Americans with a genetic variant increase heart failure and death risk.
Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Duke University found that a genetic variant present in 3-4% of self-identified Black Americans increases the risk for heart failure and death, contributing to significant decreases in longevity at the population level. The V142I transthyretin variant is associated with a substantially increased risk for heart failure starting from the age of 60, and an increased risk for death starting from the age of 70.
