Council of Datuk Dato' Malaysia president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz states that Malaysian honours from foreign countries without the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's consent are not valid, citing the Offences Relating to Awards Act 2017 (Act 787). Violators face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to RM500,000. Only the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultans, and Yang Dipertua Negeri can confer legitimate honours.
