Rare level four geomagnetic storm causes widespread auroras and potential communication disruption in the US on Friday and Saturday.
A rare geomagnetic storm is expected to cause vivid auroras, or northern lights, to be visible in much of the US on Friday and Saturday, potentially disrupting communication systems. Scientists say the strong solar storm, rated as level four out of five, occurs when the sun sends charged particles and parts of its magnetic field to Earth. This storm is the first of its severity since January 2005 and has the potential to create dazzling auroras that may be viewed as far south as Alabama and Northern California.
