2023 mental health review at Royal Adelaide Hospital reveals systemic issues, recommends changes in emergency department model, staffing, and risk assessment policies.
A mental health review prompted by an alleged murder and attack by patient Shaun Michael Dunk in Dec 2023 has recommended changes at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The review found systemic issues in the hospital's emergency department model of care, not designed or resourced for effective mental health treatment. Recommendations include establishing a shared process between the hospital and urgent care center to flag frequent attenders, reviewing mental health staffing, and reviewing risk assessment policies. South Australia Health Minister Chris Picton stated all recommendations will be implemented.
