During a funeral on February 20th, 2023, two gardaí were surrounded, threatened, and attacked by a large group of people. Lee McDonnell (32) got off a bus and joined the attack, lunging towards the officers and attempting to punch them. McDonnell's partner eventually dragged him away from the scene. McDonnell pleaded guilty to a charge of affray and was sentenced to jail by Judge Pauline Codd, who expressed concern about the lack of respect for the dead in this incident.
