A confidential draft by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) suggests that carbon offsets are largely ineffective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Staff at the U.N.-backed nonprofit found that some carbon credits failed to deliver the anticipated climate benefits and cases where more credits were sold than projects could deliver on. The findings, if upheld, could pose a significant challenge to the SBTi's board adopting carbon offsets as part of companies' emission reduction plans.
