Nigeria's Senate recommends death penalty as maximum sentence for drug trafficking.

Nigeria's Senate has recommended tougher penalties for drug trafficking, with the death penalty becoming the new maximum sentence. The change, not yet legislation, substitutes life imprisonment, which was formerly the most severe sentence. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control reports that opioid misuse, including tramadol and cough syrups containing codeine, is prevalent in Nigeria. Cannabis cultivation is also local, while cocaine, methamphetamine, and other drugs are trafficked into the country.
