5.8 magnitude earthquake off Taiwan's east coast: A 5.8 magnitude earthquake took place off Taiwan's east coast on May 10, near Hualien county at a depth of 10 km. Buildings in the capital, Taipei, were shaken but no immediate damage was reported. Since a 7.2 magnitude quake in Hualien last month, Taiwan has experienced around 1,400 aftershocks, with 17 casualties. The country, situated at the junction of two tectonic plates, is prone to earthquakes; past fatal quakes occurred in 2016 and 1999, killing over 100 and 2,000 people respectively.
