Washington Governor declares emergency over spongy moth infestation; plans aerial spraying.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee declared an emergency over the spongy moth infestation in Thurston and Skagit counties, due to the pest's destructive potential. The spongy moth, formerly known as the gypsy moth, is considered one of the most destructive forest pests introduced into the US and can defoliate millions of acres of forest and urban trees. The Washington State Department of Agriculture plans to spray aerial spraying in the affected areas to control the infestation.
