1/3 of second-hand marketplace buyers experienced scams in the last two years, with purchase scams accounting for 66% of authorised push payment fraud losses.

A survey by Which? reveals that one-third of buyers have experienced scams on popular second-hand marketplaces in the last two years, with fraud "soaring" on these platforms. Common scams include incorrect goods, no goods, empty packages, or counterfeit products. Purchase scams account for 66% of all cases of authorised push payment fraud reported to banks. In the first half of 2023, 76,946 cases resulted in £40.9 million losses. Consumers are advised to check seller reviews and profiles, and second-hand marketplaces are urged to have proper checks in place and remove scam profiles promptly.
