NOAA predicts El Niño to transition to La Niña by end of summer, increasing likelihood of a dangerous Atlantic hurricane season.

El Niño, which contributed to record-breaking heat, is expected to transition to La Niña by the end of summer, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). La Niña, characterized by cooler than normal ocean temperatures in the eastern Pacific, increases the likelihood of a dangerous Atlantic hurricane season. Above-normal temperatures are still forecast for the US in summer 2024, and residents along the Atlantic or Gulf coasts may be impacted by the worst possible climate conditions for hurricane fueling.
