Energy bosses from Centrica and E.On have called for the abolition of standing charges on energy bills and the introduction of a "progressive social tariff" that would see the government and industry subsidize lower bills for the poorer households. The proposed reforms aim to address the "postcode lottery" of energy bill costs and the impact of price shocks on UK households. Only 56% of Centrica customers currently have smart meters.
