Critically endangered short-tailed bats rediscovered in Wellington region after 7+ years.

Critically endangered short-tailed bats, the rarest mammals in New Zealand, have been recorded in the Wellington region for the first time in over seven years. Acoustic monitoring near the Pākuratahi River detected the species, which were feared extinct in the lower North Island. The discovery will inform future monitoring and pest management in the area, as well as collaborative work with the Department of Conservation.
