Colombia's Ritacuba Blanco glacier rapidly melts due to El Niño and climate change, threatening water security.
Colombia's Ritacuba Blanco glacier, in the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy National Park, is rapidly melting due to El Niño weather phenomenon and climate change, leading to cracks and water security concerns. The UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO) links record temperatures to both El Niño and greenhouse gases. Once covered in ice, the glacier is now one of six tropical glaciers remaining in the country.
