Canadian Food Inspection Agency declares Columbia River watershed infected with whirling disease in British Columbia, restricting fish and equipment movement.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has declared the Columbia River watershed in British Columbia an infected area for whirling disease, a parasite causing deformities in fish with a 90% mortality rate. Live or dead fish and equipment movements from the Columbia watershed to other waterways are restricted, and the rest of B.C. is a buffer area for the disease. No known treatment exists, but the disease does not pose a health risk to humans or pets.
