Supreme Court grants bail to Umar Ansari.

The Supreme Court of India has granted anticipatory bail to Umar Ansari, son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, in a case involving alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. The court directed Umar Ansari to appear before the trial court in connection with the case and stated that if arrested, he should be released on furnishing a bail bond of ₹20,000. The case was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal conspiracy, causing undue influence at an election, and promoting enmity prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony. Umar Ansari moved the Supreme Court after the Allahabad High Court rejected his plea for quashing the matter in December.
