2020 saw a 4.4% increase in pre-trial detention in Ireland, with foreign nationals less likely to be granted bail.
The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has reported a 21% increase in the daily average number of people held in pre-trial detention since 2017, with a 4.4% rise from 2019 to 2020. Foreign nationals, including those from EU countries, are less likely to be granted bail by Irish judges. The report recommends compiling comprehensive data on bail decisions and pre-trial detention, an independent review of the Bail Act 1997, increasing the number of judges, and providing training on European Supervision Orders and alternatives to pre-trial detention.
