Resources Minister Shane Jones has requested advice on whether to offer oil and gas companies "bonds" as compensation if their drilling rights are revoked by future NZ governments. The Fast-track Approvals Bill, designed to speed up infrastructure and project approvals, may expose future governments to costly trade disputes if investors are protected against future liability. Some investors may already use existing "investor-state dispute settlement" mechanisms for compensation.
