Mozambique's Frelimo party elects Daniel Chapo as new leader.

Mozambique's ruling party Frelimo has chosen Daniel Chapo as its new leader, making him the likely successor to President Filipe Nyusi after the October 9 elections. Frelimo's central committee elected Chapo, a 47-year-old former radio announcer and law graduate, over three other internal candidates, in a surprise move that followed an intense three-day meeting. Chapo, who has been the governor of the central Inhambane province since 2016, is presented by Frelimo as a youthful candidate who could attract young voters to the party, which has been in power for nearly five decades.
