Manitoba Court of Appeal upholds order to extradite Peter Nygard to US for sex trafficking and racketeering charges.
The Manitoba Court of Appeal has rejected fashion mogul Peter Nygard's application for a judicial review of an order to extradite him to the United States, where he faces sex trafficking and racketeering charges. The court upheld the 2022 surrender order made by then-Justice Minister, David Lametti, under the Extradition Act. Nygard's attorneys attempted to block his extradition citing concerns about his treatment in the U.S., particularly Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Centre, and arguing that there is no comparable racketeering charge in Canada. However, the appeal court found that Lametti had provided detailed reasons and the surrender order was justified, with assurances that Nygard, who faces similar allegations in Canada, would be treated humanely and the U.S. judicial process would be fair.
