Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has signed the Premarital Health Screening Law, which mandates health screenings for all prospective couples in the state. The law comes into effect on May 13th, 2024, and requires couples to present health screening certificates for genotype, hepatitis B and C, and HIV/AIDS before getting married. The initiative aims to reduce the likelihood of children being born with underlying health issues, such as sickle cell anemia, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis, and aligns with the Governor's commitment to enhancing the healthcare sector in Kano State.
