1970s DDT pollution discovered in deep-sea fish and sediments near Catalina Island; ongoing contamination raises concerns for wildlife and human health.

Researchers from UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography and San Diego State University found deep-sea fish and sediments near an offshore dump site near Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles, are contaminated with DDT-related chemicals, over half a century after the pollution occurred. The study suggests that the DDT-related chemicals may still be making their way into marine food webs, raising concerns about potential harm to wildlife and human health from consuming contaminated seafood.
