5 medical students from SRM Medical College and Trichy Government Medical College Hospital drowned in a swell surge at Lemur Beach off Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. The group had attended a wedding and visited the beach despite warnings from the India Meteorological Department about rough seas. The students, aged 23-24, were from various districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Local fishermen launched a rescue operation after the incident.
