Operation Shanela, launched in May last year to fight crime in high-density areas, has resulted in over 600,000 arrests within the past year, according to a media briefing. Members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) have conducted over 71,000 operations, with more than 49,000 explosives and 89,000 rounds of live ammunition seized. Major arrests include 183 for human trafficking and over 600,000 arrests for contravention of firearms.
