A BC First Nation has spent three years seeking to change Powell River's name, which currently reflects a man whose main goal was to assimilate Indigenous people. The idea was brought forward to city officials in May 2021, however, bureaucratic delays and heightened tension ensued. The Tla'amin Nation, in their effort to reclaim their territories, hope that the renaming will reduce the harm of the legacy that undermines Indigenous dignity.
