Toyota's hybrid Corolla sedans lead the way in fuel economy for affordable small cars under $40,000, with a claimed 3.9L/100km on the combined cycle. The hybrid hatch sees a slight increase to 4.0L/100km, and pricing starts at $32,000. The study took models from the small cars less than $40,000 category of VFACTS sales charts and only considered the most fuel-efficient variant of each model, excluding the fully-electric BYD Dolphin.
