48-year-old Christopher Jason Smyth, owner of Stat EMS ambulance service in West Virginia, has been convicted by a federal jury for failing to pay taxes withheld from employees' wages and obstructing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Smyth, who previously operated an ambulance business with significant employment tax liabilities, caused Stat EMS to amass around $3.3 million in unpaid taxes. He faces sentencing on September 4 and could receive up to five years in prison for each failure to pay taxes count and three years for obstructing the IRS.
