Iowa's high school graduation rates inflated by coding error for a decade, now corrected.

Iowa Department of Education admits to a coding error that inflated Iowa's high school graduation rates for the past decade. The error incorrectly removed mobile students who had transferred districts and dropped out, and should have been counted among non-graduates. The department identified, corrected, and communicated the error in the underlying code, which has existed for at least 10 years. Iowa's 2023 graduation rate is 87.5%, down from previous years due to the error.
