Hackers breached BC libraries, demanding ransom or threatening to release user data.
Hackers have targeted BC libraries, demanding a ransom or threatening to release user data including phone numbers and emails. The Cariboo Regional District reported that its library was one of those affected, with data obtained on users who received automated notifications between March 27 and April 19. The BC Libraries Cooperative, which provides integrated systems for multiple institutions, informed affected parties about the breach. The hacker contacted the cooperative on April 19, attempting to extort payment in exchange for not releasing the stolen data. This incident is the latest in a series of cybersecurity attacks.
