Darlington woman Zacharicyah Slater was arrested and charged with unlawful child neglect after police and firefighters rescued two small children from a smoke-filled apartment on King Edwards Street. The smoke alarm had been sounding for 20 minutes before officials arrived, with heavy smoke and cries of children heard from outside. Upon entering, authorities found a burning pot on the stove and the children on a couch, while Slater was asleep in a back bedroom.
